The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) congratulates Anwar Ibrahim on being elected as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia. Mr. Ibrahim celebrated his victory as a “change that has awaited the people of Malaysia.”
Mr. Ibrahim’s appointment marks the capstone of a lifelong and turbulent political career. Given ISNA's roots as an association of Muslim students, we particularly appreciate how he began his political journey as a young activist, during which he co-founded the Muslim youth movement, Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) in 1971. He then joined the United Malays National Organization (UNMO), through which he became Deputy Prime Minister in 1993.
As Mr. Ibrahim takes on his new role as Prime Minister, ISNA is happy that he has pledged to unite his country’s divisions, revive a struggling economy, and confront widespread corruption; we wish him well in these endeavors and pray for his success. May the people of Malaysia see better and brighter days ahead.
