BACKGROUNDER:

The impetus for this street renaming comes directly from the Investigation of the Unlawful Killing of Jamal Khashoggi by then UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial summary, or arbitrary killings, Agnes Callamard, to rename the streets of Saudi Arabia’s embassies after Jamal Khashoggi as an effort to establish truth and accountability for his heinous murder by the Saudi State with the involvement of high-level officials.

DAWN urged members of the DC Council to introduce legislation to rename the street in 2021, which passed unanimously after its introduction on December 7, 2021. The bill was signed into law by Mayor Muriel Bowser on January 5, 2022. We hope that this sign will provide a permanent remembrance to all who pass by the embassy that this crime will not be forgotten and that Khashoggi's legacy will live on.

Last year, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad provided spoken and written testimony in support of the “Jamal Khashoggi Way Designation Act of 2021” before a District of Columbia City Council public hearing for the bill and other measures.
